You're just running your chip extremely hot at full load in conditions that fall far outside any normal use case. What benefit does a 24 hour stress test offer in regards to overclock stability?
My goal btw is to hit 4.5 GHz to 4.7 GHz and this is on air. I had it stable for a very long time at 4.2 GHz at 1.41 volts but of course want it lower than that in terms of volts.
In the current situation I am trying to see the how little voltage I can use to run at 4.2 GHz. By the end of that process I'm happy to call it stable and have yet to run into any issues down the road with any of them. For nearly all my PC's I run max voltage/temp (whichever I hit first) then dump an 8 hour XTU pass on it, then encode a season of something with Xilisoft and Handbrake, along with multiple Cinebench passes. to make absolutely sure that your minimum voltage can handle everything you could possibly throw at it.Īll of those steps are fairly ridiculous, but that's the nature of really fine tuning your OC. If you're trying to test stability by reducing the voltage repeatedly to get your maximum performance:watt ratio you're going to need to test every step at least 10 hours accompanied by multiple real world tests, along with restarts, cold boots, hard shut off's, etc. My personal opinion, if you're setting it to your max comfortable voltage and keeping it there 24/7 run your test for at least 10 hours and you can probably call it good. Notched up the voltage a bit, and everything settled right down. I've had tests be 8-10 hours stable with XTU and AIDA64 and then ran into some odd boot failures/restarts down the road. The bottom line is are there any experts out there who can give a definitive number on how long we should do cpu stress tests? Now I am overclocking an i5 2500K and have 3 hrs of Prime95 done. How long does one really need to run cpu stress testing programs? When I did the overclocking with my son's AMD FX-6300 I did 24 hrs of Prime95 and some other lengthy tests.
